You've had this happen. You check your camera feed and everything looks fine. Twenty minutes later, you check again and the camera is offline. Then it comes back. Then it goes offline again.
Your security camera system is stuck in a reboot loop.
Sometimes you can hear it — a little click as the IR lights turn off and on, off and on, all night long. Sometimes it's silent, but the offline alerts on your phone tell the story.
A DVR camera or NVR that keeps losing cameras to reboots is unreliable. And an unreliable wireless security camera system might as well not exist. I've chased down this problem on dozens of installations, including multiple OHWOAI setups. Here's what actually causes random reboots and how to stop them for good.
1. Your Power Supply Is Too Weak (Most Common)
This is the #1 cause of rebooting cameras, and almost nobody checks it first.
Every camera needs a certain amount of power. A poe camera system delivers power through the Ethernet cable. But wireless cameras use power adapters, and those adapters can fail or be underpowered.
Here's what happens: the camera tries to do something that needs extra power — like turning on its IR LEDs at night, or activating two-way audio. The power adapter can't deliver enough juice, so the camera shuts down and restarts.
The fix: Look at your camera's power adapter. It should list the output (usually 12V DC and a number like 1A, 2A, or 3A). If your camera needs 2A and you're using a 1A adapter from an old device, that's your problem.
Replace it with an adapter that matches or exceeds the camera's requirement. For OHWOAI outdoor security cameras wired setups, always use the included power supply — third-party adapters are often underpowered.

2. The Cable Is Damaged or Too Long
For wired security camera system outdoor setups, cable problems are a major cause of reboots.
A damaged cable can cause intermittent power loss. A tiny cut in the insulation lets moisture in, which corrodes the wires over time. Or maybe the cable is stretched too tight and the internal wires are pulled apart.
The fix: Inspect the entire cable run from camera to recorder. Look for:
- Cuts, nicks, or rodent damage
- Water inside the connectors (unscrew the BNC or Ethernet connector and look for rust or moisture)
- Cables that are pulled too tight around corners
For bnc camera systems (analog), make sure the connector is fully seated and locked. Loose BNC connectors cause intermittent power and signal loss.
If your cable run is over 300 feet for PoE or 700 feet for analog, you might need an extender or signal booster. Long runs cause voltage drop, and when voltage drops too low, the camera reboots.

3. The Camera Is Overheating
This one is simple: electronics get hot. When they get too hot, they shut down to protect themselves. When they cool off, they reboot.
If your dome security camera is mounted in direct sunlight, inside a hot attic, or in a location with no airflow, it might be cooking itself.
The fix: Go touch your camera after it's been running for a few hours. Is it uncomfortably hot? Like, you don't want to keep your hand on it? That's too hot.
For outdoor cameras, try mounting them under an eave or awning to block direct sun. For indoor cameras, make sure they're not placed right next to a heater or in a sealed electronics cabinet.
Some wireless security cameras have a "temperature" readout in the app or web interface. Check it. If it's consistently above 120°F (50°C), you have a heat problem.
