How to Winterize Your Outdoor Security Cameras (So They Survive the Cold)

  • The camera is in a temporary location (not permanently mounted)

Don't bring cameras inside if:

  • They're your only security for a vulnerable area
  • They're hard-wired and difficult to remove
  • You have cameras with built-in heaters rated for the cold

A camera in your warm house records nothing happening outside. Sometimes no camera is better than a frozen, dead camera — but not often. Make the call based on your risk tolerance.

What to Do If a Camera Freezes

Despite your best efforts, a camera might still freeze.

Don't pour hot water on it. Sudden temperature change can crack the housing and lens. Seriously, don't do this.

Don't hit it. Ice won't break because you tapped the camera. You'll just break the camera.

Do check for water intrusion after thawing. Ice expands. It can crack seals even if the housing looks intact. After the camera thaws, check inside for moisture. If you see fog or droplets, the camera is damaged.

After Winter: Spring Inspection

Once winter ends, do a thorough spring check.

  • Check for water damage. Look for rust on connectors, fog inside lenses, or corrosion on circuit boards.
  • Tighten mounts. Freeze-thaw cycles loosen everything.
  • Replace damaged cables. Cold cracks won't heal. Swap any cable with cracked insulation.
  • Clean lenses. Winter grime is nasty. Give everything a deep clean.
