You don't need internet for it to work,but if you want to realize remote access(viewing cameras remotely via phone and PC), there has to be internet in the place where you place the NVR system; you have to connect the NVR to your router directly with a network cable, to make the Cloud ID of your system online. If there is no internet, you couldn't view cameras remotely via phone and PC, just can watch live video in the place where you place the NVR system.

Question:What kind of hard drive do I need to order for this setup?

The hard drive is 3.5 inch internal SATA HDD, you could buy one and install it into the NVR box, go into system setup>>HDD setup, choose the hard drive and format it, the HDD will work.
This system supports up to 6TB hard drive, and if the hard drive is over 2TB, we suggest you purchase a 12V3A power supply for NVR box, the bigger hard drive needs more power.
