How to Run Security Camera Cables Through Attic and Walls (Complete DIY Guide)

You bought the cameras. You picked the spots. Now you have to get the cables from point A to point B without making your house look like a spider web.

Running security camera cables is the part most homeowners dread. It's not that it's technically difficult. It's that nobody ever explains the actual process. Where do you drill? How do you fish wires through insulation? What do you do when you hit a fire block?

I've run miles of cable for OHWOAI PoE security camera systems. After dozens of installations, I've learned what works and what wastes time. Here's exactly how to run cables through attic and walls like someone who's done it before.

Before You Start: Plan Your Route

Don't start drilling holes without a plan. Walk your property and decide where each camera will go. Then figure out where your NVR will live — usually in a closet, office, or basement near your router.

For each camera, trace the cable path in your head. From the camera location to the attic (or crawlspace) to the NVR. Identify any obstacles: fire blocks inside walls, insulation, HVAC ducts, electrical wires.

Draw a simple map. Label each camera. Note which walls are exterior (they have insulation) and which are interior. This 15-minute planning step will save you hours of frustration.

Most OHWOAI PoE cameras use Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables. A single cable carries both power and video. You don't need separate power cables, which simplifies everything.

  • Drill with long drill bit (12-18 inches)
  • Fish tape or glow rods (essential for pulling wire through walls)
  • Drywall saw or keyhole saw

Fish tape is worth buying. It's a flat steel tape that you push through walls to guide wires. Glow rods are fiberglass rods that connect together for longer runs. Either one works. Don't try to do this without them.

Step 1: Drill the Camera Mounting Hole First

Start at the camera location. Hold your OHWOAI camera bracket against the wall or soffit where the camera will mount. Mark the screw holes and the center hole where the cable will come through.

Drill the cable hole with a 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch drill bit. Make sure the hole is slightly angled downward on exterior walls — this prevents water from running along the cable and into your wall.

Drill the screw holes if you're mounting into wood. For brick or concrete, you'll need masonry anchors. But that's another guide.

Step 2: Access the Attic or Crawlspace

Most cameras on the upper floor of a house are easiest to wire through the attic. Get up there with your flashlight and fish tape. Watch your step — only walk on the joists, not the drywall.

Locate the spot directly above or behind your camera hole. This can be tricky. Have someone stand outside and tap on the wall while you listen in the attic. Or measure carefully from known reference points.

Once you've found the spot, push your fish tape down through the attic floor toward the camera hole. Have someone outside guide the fish tape through the hole. If you hit a fire block (a horizontal wood beam inside the wall), you'll need to drill through it with a long flexible bit or cut an access hole in the drywall.

Step 3: Pull the Cable

Tape your Ethernet cable to the end of the fish tape. Use electrical tape and wrap it smooth — no lumps that will snag on insulation or framing.

Pull the fish tape back up into the attic. Go slowly. If the cable snags, don't yank it. Push back slightly, then try again. Insulation is the usual culprit. A second person feeding the cable from outside helps.

Once the cable is in the attic, leave plenty of slack. You need enough to reach your NVR location plus a few extra feet for mistakes. Better too long than too short.

Step 4: Run the Cable Across the Attic

Now you need to get the cable from the camera location to your NVR. This usually means running it across the attic and down another wall.

Keep cables away from electrical wires. If you have to cross electrical wires, do it at a 90-degree angle. Never run security camera cables parallel to electrical wires — the interference can cause video issues.

Secure the cable with cable clips every few feet. Don't let it lay loose on top of insulation where someone might step on it. Staple it to joists or rafters using low-voltage cable staples (the round ones, not the sharp ones that can pierce the cable).

Step 5: Drill Down to Your NVR Location

For the NVR, you need to get the cable down from the attic into the room where your recorder lives. This is the hardest part if that room isn't directly below the attic.

Drill a hole through the top plate of the wall. The top plate is the horizontal 2x4 at the very top of the wall frame. You can access it from the attic. Use a long drill bit and drill straight down inside the wall cavity.

Push your fish tape down through the hole. Go to the room below and cut a small hole in the drywall where you want your NVR cable to emerge. Use a low-voltage mounting bracket (a plastic ring) to create a clean hole.

Fish the tape out through the drywall hole. Tape your cable to it. Pull it through. Leave plenty of slack.

Step 6: Terminate the Cable Ends

You now have Ethernet cable coming out of the wall at your camera location and at your NVR location.

At the camera end, install an RJ45 connector. This requires a crimping tool. Follow the T568B wiring standard. If this sounds intimidating, buy pre-made cables with connectors already attached. You can cut one end off to thread through holes, then re-terminate it.

At the NVR end, you have options. The simplest is to plug the cable directly into one of the PoE ports on your OHWOAI NVR. If you have many cameras, use a PoE switch — plug all cameras into the switch, then one cable from the switch to your NVR.

Step 7: Test Before You Seal

Before you close up walls or mount cameras permanently, test everything.

Plug the camera into the cable. Connect the other end to your NVR. Power up the system. Open your OHWOAI app and verify the camera feed appears. Check the image quality. Adjust the camera angle.

Run the cable for a few hours to make sure there are no intermittent connection issues. Once you're confident, you can mount the camera permanently and patch any drywall holes you made.

Alternative: Running Cables Without an Attic

If you don't have attic access, you have fewer options but it's still doable.

Run cables along baseboards using paintable cable raceway. It looks like white plastic trim. Hide cables under carpet edges or behind furniture. Run them through unfinished basements or crawlspaces instead of attics.

For a cleaner look, cut channels in drywall and use low-voltage old-work boxes. But that's advanced work. Most homeowners stick with surface-mounted raceway.

Some OHWOAI customers opt for wireless cameras in hard-to-wire locations. Battery-powered wireless cameras need no cables at all — just a mount and a clear WiFi signal. The trade-off is battery charging every few months.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Not leaving slack. When the cable is tight, you can't move the camera later. Leave at least 12 inches of extra cable at both ends.

Stapling through the cable. Use round low-voltage staples. Regular staples will pierce the insulation and short the connection.

Running cables across attic floor. Someone will step on it. Staple to joists instead.

Forgetting about water. Where your cable exits an exterior wall, seal the hole with silicone caulk. Otherwise, water will find its way in.

Using the wrong cable. For outdoor runs, use outdoor-rated (CMX or direct burial) cable. Regular indoor Cat6 will crack and fail after one winter.
